YRbk Proofs from Clive
Had a cracking meeting with Clive from Duffields this morning, where he gave us our full colour proofs! (cue big cheers) Exciting times. Until we turned the front page and saw... a spelling mistake. On the first page. Oh dear.
Anyways so I talked with Fred, then called Clive and he very kindly told us it's fine and we can change it for no extra cost. So it's a simple case of re-doing the page, PDF it and stick it on disc for Clive to collect later today.
Oh and we forgot to put the college's name anywhere on the entire document. Whoops. Rookie mistake. Fortunately, with our extra page to change we can sneakily add the college's name and address to the front page so all is not lost.

Now I think it's fair to say, and Adam will concour, when we first saw the cover - our special glorious concept cover - didn't quite have the impact we had hoped. Now, for me, it's a grower, and I much prefer it now than I did the first time I saw it, and we talked with Joe Gilmore a little about it and the conclusion we came to was that people aren't going to scrutinise it's every detail, and that when we step back from it and be objective it actually stands up very well. Plus the link it will have to the courses end of year show will be more tangible once the show is up and the installation is freestanding.

YRbk Hello Clive...
Well well well we are very excited today, as we had Clive from Duffields come visit, but more importantly he's taken our year book to get printed!! Which is great news cos it means NO MORE CHANGES. So we gave Clive our disc an PDF and we'll leave the rest up to the very capable hands of the Duffields team.

YRbk Meeting 18/05
Well that was short lived...
We made a short visit to Inter. Dis. today to push ppl to give us the last bit of copy we need... and we came back being told the contents page is no longer working and they don't like it (it's not dynamic enough...more on that later) and the centre spread still isn't good enough and we need to change a number of other photos etc etc etc.
So a bad day then.
The proposed changes were to delete the contents page images and replace them with blank boxes with the students name inside. Because that would be more dynamic. Yes that is sarcasm. And yes that is what they told us.
Also Cheryl is still requesting we put more alumni pages in and more information about ex-students which is neither relevant or wanted by the current graduating year.
Fortunately Jaclyne is on our side and after an hour of talks she basically told Cheryl it can't be done. We have told them, after talks with Lorenzo, that the deadline is tomorrow, and that has become our stance for changes. We think we've compromised enough in todays changes which are switching the Introduction and the Contents pages around so there is more explaination than jumping straight into the, admittedly a little abstract, contents pages. And we've put text on the blank boxes for Intro etc.

YRbk Meeting 17 May
So we had a meeting with Jaclyne today after she had a 1 1/2 hour meeting with Cheryl. Basically its good news all round, though the number of tabs on our mock up may say otherwise. The majority of the changes are just small edits like grammar and spelling, though the copy was copied and pasted so whatever problems we missed when we checked it was there when we were given it.
The only bogie on the radar is Cheryl is still not keen on the second centre spread, though after talking with Jaclyne it seems maybe she just has an issue with that particular students work which wouldn't seem so far fetched to suggest when you consider the constant re-evaluations of content we've had to put up with so far. While this year book cannot be completely objectively collated, as we know from working so closely in a team, Cheryl and the other tutors have consistently been, in my opinion, a little too subjective with the content of the book. We have asked for 5 images from each student and the images of their work the submitted was their own personal choice, so the times when we have been told "this piece of work is not as good as another and should be switched" has been frustrating when we were not ever given images of the suggested works.
Don't get me wrong, I can see how our year book so far has gone really quite a lot smoother than it could've, and considerably more than other groups (from the outside looking in), however the quantity of last minute changes, and their considerable size, has made these past couple of weeks a little frustrating.
But onwards and upwards! It seems to be going well, the majority of the Year Book has been signed off and after these grammatical alterations we'll just need a couple of lines of copy and one image change and we're there!
Plus the small edit to our AWESOME front cover...

YRbk Meeting 6
Ok, things are getting a little messy. And we are not paricularily happy about it.
Todays meeting has been, well, not good. Basically we had agreed a number of deadlines for copy and for images, from students and tutors alike. Jaclyne has busted a hump getting us the majority of student work, but the work from tutors has been slow in coming. Now we've returned after the Easter break and turned up to a meeting where when we've sat down, a new tutor has entered the meeting (having only been to one before) asking us to explain 2 months of design directions and then asking us to change half of it. We spent the best part of 2 and a half hours trying to go through stuff that we'd already decided on when the meeting could've lasted less than half an hour.
The changes we've been asked to make is to remove the work in public section (which was requested by them at the start), move it to the back, take out a number of quotes pages which act as buffers between student spreads, and basically fill 5-6 double page spreads with alumni work; in effect profile pages for ex-students. It's not something the students want (in fact they are adamantly against it) and this was the first time anyone outside the course tutors had heard of it.
Now we understand that dealing with clients is a precarious process, trying to work towards an end product that in the end belongs to them, but we don't think we're just spitting our dummies out at this situation. 4 weeks ago (and further) it was agreed the number of pages of the document and the layout of these spreads. Now that may be subject to changes, but not wholesale changes as we've been asked to, with content that we, and the students, think is counter to what this yearbook is, being a showcase for their work. The plans for alumni profiles spread from 2-3 pages each, involve poor quality images taken from websites and involve body text of night on 300 words, when current students only have 50-70.
Having said all that (and we tried to very politely let them know that we were pretty sure this was a bad idea, to no avail) we worked with them in todays meeting for over an hour to sort out how exactly we can work this in. Its a hard line to draw because we need to be firm but not offensive, so we've taken the images (where there were other issues) and told them we'll go away and do what we can, and basically do a version like they want, and a version like we've agreed for all this time.
Adam sent a very precise email to cheryl about it afterwards. He wasn't a happy bunny:
(and very kindly put my name first. Cheers adam.)

We have left the meeting pretty confused about what is happening, due to students and tutors having conflicting ideas. The newly proposed section devoted to ex-students seems unnecessary and confusing for the user. These images would work as a backdrop to quotes pages, but this inclusion should have been mentioned weeks ago. We are trying to deliver the appropriate outcome that we would all be happy with but with such tight deadlines and other factors, we cannot afford to change the structure so significantly that it puts the whole project in jeopardy.
The profile and introductory spreads are now in progress, and will be delivered on time. However, the delays and confusions surrounding sections and structures ultimately means that we will be left without direction, which means these sections would have little or no context. At this point in the project it is imperative we are all on the same page.
Our deadline to have the whole book designed is the 9th May. That means we have potentially two more weeks of development before we hand it over to the printer.
We still need a significant amount of copy and images from you to complete the book.
- Acknowledgement page copy
- Quotes for 5x spreads
- Student images (To be shot on Thursday)
- Cover photography (To be shot next Tuesday)
- Outstanding copy for students profiles
- Events/ Work in public copy/images (we still need clarification on what this is going to be) (we suggest doing some sort of introduction to this section)
- All contact details for students
This is a massive list, and we are certainly worried. We cannot afford to waste any more time discussing options and page layouts this close to final hand ins, not just for this brief but for our personal work.
We will put together the final spreads for the introduction, contents and profile pages ready next week and we will send Jaclyne a PDF of what we have next Tuesday. We will continue to liaise with Jaclyne on behalf of the students to rectify the issues raised today.

YRbk Agreed Spreads
We've got our final spreads! Well almost all of them. We still have 3 students work outstanding which is becoming a bit of a bane, but all the info we have for everyone else is here and layed out as per our massive pin up.

Well we've had a right epic day. It was a bit of a chore to get us all in one place at one time, my train was late, then I had to go pick something up, then Adam had a meeting at 2 and Luke was due in print at 3:30, so we were back and forth all over the place, but eventually we got it done - one massive wall of our favourite spreads we've done so far. Then we went through each student and highlighted our favourite spreads and parts of spreads and made notes. Then the guys most graciously gave me the spreads and told me to get to work!

My idea of the work in public sections. We're meeting together on tuesday (yup, in the holidays...thats what we're meant to do right?) to get our individual sets of spreads for all the students we have work for, mix em up and see what sticks. I just did these quickly as the way I envisage the centre work in public sections looking to show the other two guys see what they think. I've based it around the same square thumbnail format we're doing for the intro page. Really it depends on how many images and what kind of images they give us, but generally I see it as a number of small profiles about each image and where it sits etc.

YRbk Progressing
Hi Cheryl, and Jaclyne,
I writing this quick email to ask whether we have any additional copy
for the year book. This is a reminder of what we need for the first
week back after Easter, Tuesday 26th April (At The Latest!)
We still need
- details, copy and images for the work in public section.
- remaining copy and images for student profile pages.
- copy for the introduction and acknowledgements
- copy for the quotes pages
It really is imperative that we get this as soon as possible, or else
we are going to struggle to finish
Jaclyne is working like mad to get students to cooperate and be on
time with images and copy, as well as photoshoots. I do urge that
these students with deliverables outstanding will also be made aware
of this by the course tutors.
We have now got all the profile pages designed, and we are awaiting
details of the above to be able to get on with the rest of the
project.
Kind regards,

YRbk Contents&Quote development
The final (ish) thumbnails for the contents and quotes pages (barr adding the actual images of course). The principle is to give a taste of each students page without actually putting their name or anything on there, sticking with our original concept of the work taking precedence over anything else.

YR bk full sample layout
Now this is basically a collection of all the work I've done on this project up to this point. I basically thought it would be good to show, as a quick mock up, about the full extent of the book itself as a whole. I've just used a number of the spreads from our first few layouts for the original 3 students we've got so far, and inputting the other elements - contents, quotes pages etc. It just gives more of realistic feel to the thing rather than constant sheets of spreads. Its also nice to see the (very crudely photoshopped) front cover as well.
The contents page is an extension of an idea Luke had about thumbnail squares. Within my awesome 12x12 grid we're using (did i mention it was awesome?) the number of pages (60) conveniently and expertly fits perfectly as 3x3 thumbnails in the grid (where each thumbnail denotes a double page spread), minus one thumbnail at the front for the cover (blank) and one for the back (blank).
As a little experiment I decided to run these squares (just white and green) across the quotes pages, not all of them, just one or two, to carry the theme through the rest of the document. I like it personally, and i think the guys do too.
